Autumn is here!

Well, well, well… I am finally seeing it with my own eyes…AUTUMN is here! Slowly, slowly tiny changes are happening all around. There is a hint of yellow in the trees, pinecones are plumping and ready to drop, and the tops of the Red Maples are just starting to flame. The seasons are always changing ever so slightly and it’s quite exciting to notice all the subtle differences from day to day. Autumn is HERE, now it’s time to get into the FALL spirit!

That being said….even though I have glee in my voice my decorating approach is on the calmer side. My approach to decorating for the seasons is to ease into it…little by little. I don’t go full throttle right away. I take my time. Just like with nature, it changes ever so slightly each day. I like to add a few things here and there as I collect them…as I see them. It just adds a tiny bit of excitement and build-up throughout the seasons.

Hunting and gathering

I always start by bringing the outdoors in. And of course, I try to gather up free resources first. Luckily for me, one of my favorite pastimes is hunting and gathering. I search my own backyard and then my local surroundings. That’s why taking a neighborhood walk is fun for me. I’m always on the lookout for acorns, buckeyes, pinecones, and fall leaves. I confess I’m a pinecone hoarder! I especially love the ones that come from White Pine trees. They have a bit more color to them and have a more airy look because their seed scales are spaced farther apart. I’m also obsessed with the larger fuzzy-topped acorns of the Bur Oak Tree… they are super unique and look very festive.

Bringing the Autumn indoors

It doesn’t have to be elaborate…it can be as simple as adding a few acorns to a windowsill along with a colorful mini pumpkin.

I love adding seasonal accents to my kitchen. My counter is a great place to add wooden bowls with autumn squash and pumpkins along with a wreath made of birch limbs.

The changing of the seasons…what a joyful time! But you don’t have to go in with a bang. You can EASE into it and celebrate all the new little changes happening around you one day at a time. Start by bringing the outdoors in. Why not try to add just one natural fall element a week? Whether it’s yellowing fall branches and blooms from your own backyard, or colorful pumpkins and squash from your local grocery store…enjoy it all! Embrace the new season…AUTUMN is here!
