Decorating with Smalls Can Add Big Fun: I Love Littles

Bric-a-brac, knick-knacks, and my favorite, tchotchkes… all these words can be used to describe the same thing… SMALLS! And what would my decor be without smalls? Boring and lifeless I suppose! Smalls bring out the personality of a home and its owner. They help tell your story and can make a sterile space into a beautiful abode! They can add color and warmth as well as whimsy. Decorating with SMALLS can add BIG fun!

For the most part, my home is made up of 60 percent large items, 3o percent medium items, and 10 percent smalls. It’s definitely a tricky balance between tasteful and tacky. I’m talking about nonfunctional purely decorative tchotchkes. They can bring fun, interest, and a bit of humor into a space. But if you go overboard… before you know it, you’ll be swimming in a sea of bits and bobs.

By grouping a few small decor items together with larger elements, it makes it feel less cluttered while making it feel more purposeful. I do have a collection of smalls that I keep in a glass case BUT what I really love is intermingling knick-knacks with my existing displays such as houseplants on a table or a stack of old books on a shelf. Lately, I seem to be obsessed with vintage fish tank decor… Japanese pagodas! I’m also having fun with a few vintage ceramic dogs I have found it recently! Call me crazy but I like it!

These cute little ceramic birds are only 3 inches tall but they make my whole centerpiece come to life!

extra tiny smalls

Recently I have come across some very fun SUPER smalls! They aren’t just small they are teeny tiny and very sweet.

Overall, what I love about smalls is that they can really add an appealing focal point to your decor. They can spark conversation, add some humor, and just create another layer of interest to your rooms. So have some big FUN with smalls! They are plentiful at your local antique store – and the only limit is your imagination. Think about it – you can make a collection out of anything – even vintage aquarium pagodas! Collect what you love! So let’s start small! Let’s think big! But most of all… let’s get HOMEY!
